CHAMPAIGN, Illinois — Kansas football is matching up against Illinois in another non-conference matchup.
The No. 20 Jayhawks (1-0) came in off a 48-3 win against Lindenwood. The Fighting Illini (1-0) came in off of a 45-0 win against Eastern Illinois. This is Kansas’ first road game of the season.
Will Kansas be able to top Illinois in the same way the Jayhawks were last year? How will redshirt junior quarterback Jalon Daniels perform in his first significant matchup of the season? The game kicked off Saturday at a little after 6 p.m. (CT).

HALFTIME: Illinois 13, Kansas 10
Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has thrown another interception, and this one was returned for a touchdown. After the extra point, Illinois leads 13-10 with 0:36 left in the second quarter. Fighting Illini defensive back Xavier Scott had the pick and took it back 28 yards.
Illinois added a field goal with less than two minutes left before halftime to cut Kansas’ lead to 10-6. The field goal attempt was from 50 yards out. The drive took 2:27 off of the clock and went 43 yards in seven plays.
Kansas went 81 yards in seven plays, while taking 3:05 off of the clock, to score its first touchdown of the day. Quarterback Jalon Daniels found wide receiver Luke Grimm for a three-yard touchdown pass. After the extra point, the Jayhawks lead 10-3 with 3:32 left in the second quarter.
Kansas forces a turnover, but fails to capitalize
A big hit from linebacker Cornell Wheeler forced a fumble, and defensive end Jereme Robinson recovered it to give Kansas an important turnover. Illinois was threatening another quality drive, but this gave the Jayhawks great field position. Kansas started at the 40 yard line of Illinois with 10:11 left in the second quarter, with the score tied 3-3.
About a couple minutes later, Kansas’ drive ended without any points. The Jayhawks got just outside the 30 yard line before a fourth-down attempt failed. Illinois took over with 8:20 left in the second quarter at its own 31 yard line, and the score still tied 3-3.
The score is all tied up again, this time at 3-3. Kansas saw kicker Tabor Allen connect on a 29-yard field goal with 12:39 left in the second quarter to end a 10-play, 64-yard drive that took 5:56 off of the clock. The Jayhawks had scored a touchdown earlier on the drive, but the play was called back due to a penalty.
Illinois probably should have had a touchdown, but a dropped pass just outside the end zone forced the Fighting Illini to settle for a 23-yard field goal. As a result, Illinois leads 3-0 with 3:35 left in the first quarter. The drive took 7:31 off of the clock and went 62 yards in 14 plays.
Kansas football looked to be moving the ball well on its first drive offensively, especially on the ground. But after crossing midfield, quarterback Jalon Daniels threw an interception on a pass intended for wide receiver Luke Grimm. Illinois takes over at its own 33 yard line with 11:10 left in the first quarter.
