TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A new partnership between a group of local colleges and universities aims to create a seamless college transition for students who want to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical field.

At The University of Texas at Tyler College of Pharmacy earlier today, seven partnering institutions signed a memorandum of understanding impacting qualified pharmacists.

Dean of the Fisch College of Pharmacy at UT Tyler, Dr. Amy Schwartz, said the partnership will provide prospective students with “direct guidance as to what courses they need to take.” Various application fees will also be waived.

“It really helps to take away some of the guessing and waiting that occurs traditionally with the process,” said Schwartz.

The schools involved in the program include UT Tyler, Stephen F. Austin State University, Tyler Junior College, Trinity Valley Community College, Panola College, Sam Houston State University, and East Texas Baptist University.

“It is a great opportunity for our students who start at Panola College and want to pursue a degree in pharmacy,” said Panola College President Dr. Jessica Pace. “To come over to UT Tyler, and their College of Pharmacy, this is just a smooth pathway for them.”

The event comes at a time when pharmacy jobs are in-demand.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, in the first quarter of the year, there were over 10,000 retail pharmacy openings, and availability for over 4,000 clinical pharmacists. Many of those jobs were in the southern United States, including in Texas.

UT Tyler President Dr. Julie Philley felt the program will bring more health care professionals to the Piney Woods region.

“Training health care professionals like pharmacists right here in East Texas allows us to educate the workforce,” Philley said. “We can take people from our communities that live here locally or across the state of Texas, train them and allow them to be injected into our communities and stay local.”

“I think us having this program here and having the students learn and grow with the preceptors and other pharmacists that they work with in the area, it will help them become familiar with the patients and then want to stay and practice here in the future,” Schwartz added.

Schwartz said the College of Pharmacy hopes to admit 50 students this year. The current first-year class consists of 42 students.
