Week 1 of the college football season is in the books and the US LBM Coaches Poll provides us with an early look at how this season could play out.
Sports Pulse
The Kentucky Wildcats and the South Carolina Gamecocks begin the Southeastern Conference competition early when they meet in Week 2 of the season.
South Carolina has won the last two meetings (2022-2023) against Kentucky and holds the overall series lead 20-14-1. Neither team is ranked within the US LMB Coaches Poll this week but Kentucky was the fourth-highest among unranked teams to receive votes (23 points).
Kentucky will host the Gamecocks at Kroger Field for its second consecutive home game. The Wildcats were declared the winner over Southern Miss, 31-0, last week after weather impacted the season opener and was eventually called early. South Carolina won its season opener with a 23-19 home victory over Old Dominion.
Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff made his first career start with Kentucky, completing 12 of 18 passes for 169 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Vandagriff was a member of the 2021 and 2022 Georgia teams that won back-to-back national championships.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers completed just 10 of 23 passes for 114 yards for South Carolina last week but was sacked four times. He contributed to the run game with 68 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Running back Raheim Sanders rushed had 88 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
Here’s what to know about the South Carolina-Kentucky Week 2 matchup going into Saturday:
College football 2024: Kentucky vs. South Carolina predictionsSB Nation: Kentucky 27, South Carolina 16
John Morgan Francis writes “It’s only been just over two quarters, but Kentucky’s defense has been said to be arguably its best in recent memory. Meanwhile, its offense has playmakers at every position, and Vandagriff appears to have all of the talent and passion to lead it in scoring points. South Carolina will not fall over easily, but Kentucky should be too much of a test for them.”
College Football Network: South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20
Will Helms writes “Shane Beamer’s teams have historically underwhelmed in Week 1 before going back to the drawing board prior to Week 2. A lot has to go right for the Gamecocks after a lot went wrong last season, but Beamer has three wins as a 10-point underdog since 2021, the third-most in college football in that time.”
Knoxville News Sentinel: Kentucky 24, South Carolina 10
John Adams writes “Until I saw the Gamecocks stumble around against Old Dominion, I thought they would be one of the worst teams in the SEC. Now, I think they might be the worst.”
