One of the reasons the Los Angeles lakers had a disappointing 2023-24 season was that forward Jarred Vanderbilt was riddled with injuries throughout. He missed the first several weeks of the season with heel bursitis, and then in early February, he came down with a foot injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year.
It was generally expected that he would make a full recovery within a few months, and there were even hopes that he would be able to return in the playoffs.
But he didn’t return in the postseason and had to watch the Lakers get waxed in five games in the first round by the Denver Nuggets. With training camp slowly approaching, Los Angeles Times beat writer Mike Bresnahan said on the “LakeShow Podcast” that Vanderbilt may not be ready to start the new season.
This is concerning news for a team that badly needs his ball-hawking defense on the perimeter, not to mention his defensive rebounding and overall energy and versatility.
When he returned from his heel ailment, he was starting to find his game in January, especially on offense, where he is seen as a liability. He averaged 10.5 points on 66% field-goal shooting in 22.8 minutes a game over his last eight games and was figuring out how to contribute offensively by flashing into the paint and getting himself involved in transition as both a ball-handler and a finisher.
