American submariners have joined forces with the City of Perth to plant more than a dozen trees at a local park.
Submariners from the USS Hawaii worked with City of Perth staff and students from St George’s Anglican School to plant 15 mature trees at John Oldham Park in Perth last Saturday morning.
The City of Perth came up with the volunteering initiative after it was contacted by the USS Hawaii in early August.

The submariners arrived in WA in August to commence a submarine tendered maintenance period at HMAS Stirling as part of the AUKUS agreement between Australia, the United States and United Kingdom.
“We were delighted to host some of the crew from the USS Hawaii along with students at St George’s Anglican Grammar School for some tree planting at one of our city parks,” Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said.
“Neville Collard performed a wonderful welcome to country ceremony, which the US submariners were really impressed with.

“This was a great initiative by the USS Hawaii to approach the city to see if we had any community initiatives they could get involved with. I expect we will see a lot more US Navy personnel in the coming years, especially submariners, in Western Australia and these sorts of activities and relationships are invaluable.”
