How effective are campaign surrogates? Harris-Walz campaign stop in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Gwen Walz, the wife of Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee Tim Walz came to Michigan on Wednesday. It’s the second time in two weeks, the Harris campaign has sent a spouse to campaign in Grand Rapids.

Michigan educators gathered at City Built Brewing Company in downtown Grand Rapids, supporting the Harris-Walz ticket.

“Let’s be teacher creative, let’s find ways that teachers know, that teachers figure out. Let’s use our teacher minds to think about this race and this election,” said First Lady of Minnesota, Gwen Walz.

She touched on the middle class, “and most of us in here, teachers, are middle class.”

First Lady Walz spoke about how they plan to lift all hard-working Americans up under the Harris-Walz administration in their “equal opportunity economy”.

“We know that those policies that she is advocating for and putting forth, they lift up hardworking middle-class families, families like our own. That is super important, that’s called an advocate,” said Walz.

Do people like seeing Harris-Walz surrogates campaigning for them? Matt Grossmann, Director of the Institute of Social Research and Public Policy at Michigan State University says it’s not an uncommon practice to bring in a surrogate that targets a specific audience.

“It is useful for them to designate people who can speak on behalf of the campaign and still draw interest, mobilization, and money,” said Grossmann.

“I obviously very much like seeing the family coming together because that’s really what it’s all about, at the DNC Hillary Clinton talked about using an old idea that it takes a village,” said Jeff Pietrowski, a middle school history teacher.

The majority leader of the Michigan Senate, Winnie Brinks, in attendance, she believes the surrogate strategy will make, not break, the Harris-Walz campaign.

“People can really relate to what they have to say, their perspective on life, to their experiences here in the Midwest so I think it’s a really smart move on the part of the Harris Walz operation,” said Senator Brinks.

President Joe Biden will be in Ann Arbor on Friday to deliver remarks about his “investing in America” agenda.
