Iowa high school football predictions Week 2Ames at Class 5A No. 2 Ankeny Centennial
Ames (0-1), Ankeny Centennial (1-0): Ames faces an uphill battle going up against a Centennial team that handled 2023 5A state runner-up Ankeny, 31-10, in its opener.
The Jaguars feature an elite running back in Braeden Jackson, who ran for 236 yards and three touchdowns against the Hawks in the opener. Malachi Curvey and Isaac Bruhl each had an interception for a Centennial defense that held Ankeny to just 26 rushing yards.
Ames is hoping quarterback Cameron Cantonwine is healthy after he was forced to sit out most of the Waukee game due to concussion protocol. Cantonwine led Ames to a touchdown on its first drive of the season before he went down against Waukee, and he finished with 81 yards rushing.

Jace Hennigar threw for 91 yards and ran for 18 in Cantonwine’s absence. Look for Ames to get star receiver Jeffrey Roberts more involved this week, but it will not be enough against an elite Centennial team. Ankeny Centennial 41, Ames 14
Class 4A No. 10 Gilbert at Carroll
Gilbert (1-0), Carroll (1-0): A dominant 272-yard, four-touchdown performance from running back Will Hawthorne lifted Gilbert past Dallas Center-Grimes, 35-28, in Week 1.
Carroll is coming off a 34-21 victory at Greene County. Carroll running back Taidyn Peterson ran for 191 yards and the Tiger defense tallied six sacks against the Rams.

Gilbert held DCG to 41 rushing yards and 263 total yards. The Tigers will need someone to step up on offense to take pressure off Hawthorne, but their defense and overall experience should be enough to get them another road win. Gilbert 27, Carroll 20
Ballard at Class 3A No. 9 Humboldt
Ballard (0-1), Humboldt (1-0): Ballard is coming off a 29-17 home loss to 2023 playoff qualifier Pella.
Things do not get easier this week with a road trip to face Humboldt, a 27-10 winner at Spencer in its opener last Friday. Humboldt is ranked ninth in the Des Moines Register’s class-by-class Week 1 rankings.
Humboldt quarterback Coen Matson completed 8 of 11 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown and he also ran for a score in the win, and Chase Flaherty returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score.

Ballard fell to Pella despite outgaining the Dutch 325-247 in total yards. The Bombers were hurt by three turnovers.
Look for Ballard to correct its mistakes and pull off the upset this Friday. Ballard 24, Humboldt 17
Class 3A No. 10 Nevada at 2A No. 9 Roland-Story
Nevada (1-0), Ballard (1-0): This is the game of the week in the Ames area.
Nevada won last year’s matchup between the two teams, 42-7. Expect this one to be much more competitive.
The Nevada defense held West Marshall to 191 yards and the Cubs forced four turnovers in a 33-7 win over the Trojans to open the season. Roland-Story cruised to a 47-0 home win over South Tama in its opener behind four touchdown passes and two field goals from Sam Knoll, 101 yards rushing from Fiston Carlson and a stifling defense that held South Tama to just 95 total yards, including just seven on the ground.

Look for Roland-Story to try and pressure Nevada quarterback Connor King and slow down Cubs’ running back Anthony Eaton, who ran for 206 yards and five touchdowns against West Marshall. The Norsemen will put up a good fight, but Nevada has too much experience up front on both offense and defense. Nevada 28, Roland-Story 13
Colo-NESCO at 8-player No. 6 Audubon
Colo-NESCO (2-0), Audubon (1-0): Colo-NESCO has yet to give up a point this season after crushing Twin Cedars (60-0) and Murray (48-0) in its first two games.
Royals’ running back Breckin Clatt has 300 yards and seven touchdowns rushing, and quarterback Jack Angell has rushed for 151 yards and two scores. They will face a much tougher test than their first two contests this week, however, as Audubon rolled past CAM on the road behind 198 yards rushing and 146 passing from quarterback Carson Wessel.
More: How Jack Angell has built up confidence as quarterback of the Colo-NESCO football team
Colo-NESCO will come out looking to make a statement. But in the end, Wessel and the Wheelers will have just enough firepower to hold off the Royals. Audubon 34, Colo-NESCO 30
Collins-Maxwell at Fort Dodge St. Edmond
Collins-Maxwell (1-0), St. Edmond (0-1): Collins-Maxwell is looking to capitalize on its decisive 64-0 home win over GMG to open the season while St. Edmond is looking to rebound from a 48-22 loss at 8-player No. 2 Bishop Garrigan in its opener.
Collins-Maxwell is led by running back/linebacker Josef Dvorak, who had 146 yards and three touchdowns rushing and 5.5 tackles against GMG. Quarterback Cooper Wierson ran for 88 yards and two scores.
Ethan Swisher threw for 137 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions for St. Edmond against Bishop Garrigan. Collins-Maxwell will give the Gaels a good fight on Friday, but St. Edmond will find enough success on the ground to complement Swisher, which will be enough to hold off the Spartans. St. Edmond 46, Collins-Maxwell 30
