PENSACOLA, Florida — A surgeon mistakenly removed a man’s liver instead of the spleen during a procedure last month, killing the 70-year-old patient on the operating table, a Florida law firm claims.
Zarzaur Law says in a news release that William Bryan of Muscle Shoals, Ala., died in the procedure at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital on Aug. 21. Bryan and his wife, Beverly, were visiting Florida when he went to the hospital because William Bryan began having “left-sided flank pain,” the news release says.
The law firm says Bryan was admitted to the hospital because of concerns about his spleen. It says Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky and another doctor convinced Bryan he needed to undergo surgery to remove the spleen, saying he risked “serious complications” if he left the hospital.
“During this operation, Dr. Shaknovsky removed Mr. Bryan’s liver and, in so doing, transected the major vasculature supplying the liver, causing immediate and catastrophic blood loss resulting in death,” the news release says.
The law firm accuses Shaknovsky of labeling the removed liver as a spleen. It also accuses Shaknovsky of mistakenly removing a portion of a patient’s pancreas in 2023.
“The surgeon told Mrs. Bryan after the procedure that the ‘spleen’ was so diseased that it was four times bigger than usual and had migrated to the other side of Mr. Bryan’s body,” the news release says. “Typical human anatomy dictates that the liver naturally exists on the opposite side of the abdominal cavity, and it is several times larger than the spleen.”
NBC News reports the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and other authorities are investigating Bryan’s death.
In a statement to USA Today, hospital officials said “We take allegations like this very seriously and our leadership team is performing a thorough investigation into this event.”
Lawyer Joe Zarzaur of Zarzaur Law is representing Bryan’s widow and says she is pursuing both criminal and civil proceedings.
