BOZEMAN, Mont. — Montana State University head football coach Brent Vigen confirmed on Monday that senior quarterback Tommy Mellott will be available for Saturday’s home opener against Maine.
Mellott left in the 4th quarter of theBobcats’ 31-7 victory over Utah Techafter scoring his second rushing touchdown. He had to be helped off the field by trainers with cramps in his legs.
“It was a grind of a game a little bit, it was a long game, and I know players on both sides were cramping up,” Vigen said. “Tommy’s was the most concerning as it happened, but he was fine yesterday, and he’ll be okay.”
One area of significance that could help with the Bobcats’ injuries is the climate on gameday. After back-to-back road games in the summer desert heat, Montana State returns to Bozeman, where it will be only a little cooler in the Gold Rush game.
“I think as we look at this game, the temperature is going to be in the 80s again,” Vigen said about the climate change. “Probably a little different type of heat, but we’ve played two games in that kind of setting and that does take its toll on you a little bit.”
Other injury updates from Vigen included sophomore kicker Casey Kautzman being evaluated over the next couple days on his timeline, and sophomore offensive lineman Conner Moore, who also left the Utah Tech game with an injury, has a fair chance of being back on the field Saturday.
Moore will be a necessity for the Bobcats as the offensive line group is dealing with injuries early in the season.
“We spoke to the O-Line depth (on Saturday), and that’s obviously a concern for us,” Vigen said. “I do think as we move into these next couple of weeks, we will get some guys back, but as far as getting any of those guys, I’m referencing JT Reed, Burke Mastel, and Justus Perkins, that’s not going to happen this week.”
Montana State kicks off against Maine in the Gold Rush game on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m.
