PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Local candidates running for office are about to kick their campaigns into high gear.
Arizona Clean Elections and Arizona Media Association are getting ready for a series of debates, starting Tuesday with the Arizona Corporation Commission.
From Maricopa County Sheriff to U.S. Senate, the debates will give voters opportunities to learn more about the candidates and the issues that matter to them.
Debates kick off Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the six candidates hoping to serve on the Arizona Corporation Commission, which sets many local utility rates, including APS.
But arguably the biggest debate is coming up in about a month when Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake face off for the first and only time on Oct. 9. Tom Collins, executive director of Arizona Clean Elections, talked with Arizona’s Family about the importance of this race.
”This will be the third time that Clean Elections has sponsored a U.S. Senate debate, so we have some experience with this,” Collins said. “I think that this is one of the most important Senate races in the entire United States. So it’s important for Arizona because we all know how important our Senators have been, from John McCain to now retiring Kyrsten Sinema. You know, our Senators are always at the center of the action, so these seats are very important for control of the Senate and the state itself.”
The Senate debate will take place on the first day of early voting.
