Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident in New Castle
NEW CASTLE, Del. — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday evening in New Castle, prompting an investigation by the Delaware State Police. The incident occurred on August 31, 2024, at approximately 9:46 p.m. on North Dupont Highway near the intersection of Hazeldell Avenue.
According to police, a black Volkswagen Passat was traveling southbound in the right lane of North Dupont Highway when the pedestrian, a 61-year-old man from New Castle, began crossing the highway from the right side, moving eastward. The man entered the right lane directly into the path of the oncoming Passat. Despite swerving to avoid the pedestrian, the driver was unable to prevent the collision.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding his name until his family is notified.
The driver of the Passat, a 60-year-old woman from Bear, Delaware, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
The crash led to the closure of the roadway for approximately five hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Binghamton Woman Pleads Guilty to Escaping Federal Custody and Methamphetamine Distribution
ALBANY, NEW YORK — Jade A. Pittsley, 34, of Binghamton, New York, pled guilty on Thursday to charges of escaping federal custody and possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, along with Matthew Scarpino, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Buffalo, and United States Marshal David L. McNulty.
Pittsley admitted that in November 2023, while serving a federal sentence for a previous methamphetamine-related offense, she absconded from a halfway house where she was under supervision. Shortly thereafter, law enforcement officers apprehended her, finding methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in her possession.
Pittsley is scheduled for sentencing on December 30, 2024, before United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino. She faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and at least 4 years of supervised release following her sentence. The final sentence will be determined by the judge based on applicable statutes, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other relevant factors.
Whitehall Woman Pleads Guilty to Access Device Fraud in Vermont Federal Court
BURLINGTON, VERMONT — Madison Carrig, 30, of Whitehall, New York, pled guilty on Thursday to two counts of access device fraud in U.S. District Court in Burlington. The charges relate to a scheme in which Carrig defrauded three car dealerships, where she was employed as an office manager or controller, by embezzling cash receipts and misusing company credit cards for personal purchases.
Carrig’s fraudulent activities took place between September 2022 and November 27, 2023. The charges were formally brought against her on July 12, 2024, and she pled guilty to the information at the court hearing. Chief Judge Christina Reiss released Carrig on conditions pending her sentencing, which is scheduled for January 3, 2025.
Carrig faces a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The final sentence will be determined by the court, guided by the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case was investigated by the Vermont State Police.
