Florida football coach Billy Napier entered the 2024 college football season with questions surrounding his job security and how long the leash would be for him in Gainesville.
After the Gators’ 41-17 loss to No. 19 Miami in the season opener, his seat seems to have gotten warmer. Florida, who lost starting quarterback Graham Mertz in the second half, gave up a program-high 41 points in a home opener on top of 529 yards of offense on Saturday to the Hurricanes.
The 41-17 loss to Miami on Saturday also marks the sixth consecutive loss under Napier, dating back to last season. It is the eighth loss in the last 13 games.

Napier has yet to lead the Gators to a bowl game in two full seasons. To put Napier’s struggles in Gainesville into perspective over the last three seasons, his predecessor, Dan Mullen, won 29 games and led the Gators to three New Year’s Six bowl games in his first three seasons at Florida. Mullen, for what it’s worth, reposted a post on X (formerly Twitter) that seemed to compare him and Napier.
Here’s what to know about Napier’s contract, including details of his buyout should Florida make a decision to part ways with him this year:
Billy Napier Florida contractLength: Seven yearsTotal value: $51.8 millionAnnual Average Value (AAV): $7.29 million (2023)
Florida signed Napier to a seven-year, $51.8 million contract when the Gators hired him away from the University of Louisiana as Mullen’s successor.
Last year, Napier had an annual average value (AAV) of $7.29 million, which ranked 16th on USA TODAY’s highest-paid college football coach database among coaches of public universities and colleges. Using that same database, his $7.29 million AAV ranked eighth among SEC coaches last year.
Note: Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher no longer are active coaches from that list.

Billy Napier-Florida buyout details
As of Sept. 1, 2024, Florida would owe Napier $28.3 million should the university decide to fire him without cause. This is calculated by the 85% of the total remaining compensation on Napier’s deal, which runs through Jan. 31, 2029.
It is also worth noting that Florida made an amendment to Napier’s contract in February, where it agreed to pay him an annual supplemental equipment payment of $100,000 to “offset the reduction in payments” from his contract with Nike that started on July 1. This $100,000 payment from Florida is broken up into two payments of $50,000 on July 1 and Feb. 1 of each year of his contract.
