The second evening session of Para athletics at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games was nothing short of spectacular, with three world records shattered at a jam-packed Stade de France. Colombia’s Karen Palomeque, Jaydin Blackwell of the USA, and Dutch long jumper Joel de Jong put their names into the history books on Saturday (31 August).
The crowd was treated to first-class performances
Palomeque lit up the track in the women’s 100m T38 final, blazing to victory with a stunning time of 12.26 – 0.12 ahead of the previous mark set by Sophie Hahn of Great Britain at Tokyo 2020.
“When I woke up today, I said to myself ‘This medal has to be mine’. I spoke to my coach. He told me to start stronger. I followed his advice and that was literally all I did,” Palomeque said.
It was the first-ever Paralympic final of the 30-year-old. Colombia also claimed bronze with Darian Faisury Jimenez. Greece’s Lida Maria Manthopoulou took the silver medal less than three months after making her international debut at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix also in Paris.
In the men’s 100m T38, Jaydin Blackwell stormed to victory, clocking an incredible 10.64 to secure the gold medal and break his own world record in 0.08.
“It was the perfect race, but I was just focused on what I had to do and get to the line as fast as possible. I was just telling myself to get out fast, do what you got to do,” said Blackwell who led a one-two USA podium with Ryan Medrano.
The men’s long jump T63 final saw Joel de Jong claim his first-ever Paralympic medal with a first-class performance making the three best marks of the event. He already had secured his gold when in the last attempt broke his own world record by one centimetre (7.68m).
Denmark’s Daniel Wagner took the silver medal with another Dutch jumper finishing with the bronze, Noah Mbuyamba.
“I knew when my Danish competitor, Daniel Wagner, when he jumped, he jumped less than me, so I knew that I was the Paralympic champion. I got a little emotional, to be honest,” De Jong revealed.
“That gave me so much strength – seeing everyone in the crowd. I looked one time to the side: to my mum, to my coach, to my prosthetist, physio, and that gave me so much strength.”
It was a special evening also for African runners as Ethiopia’s Tigist Mengistu defended her 1500m T13 Paralympic gold and Lahja Ishitile became only the second female Namibian athlete to win a Paralympic gold (women’s 400m T11).
