Video from the resort shows a white, wintry mix at the top of the mountain at 11,500 feet.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff says it was likely hail accumulation, but temperatures at the top of the mountain could have been cold enough for light snow to mix in.

The NWS says that, on average, the San Francisco Peaks can see snow in September if a good cold front moves through. Downtown Flagstaff sees its first measurable snow on November 11.

Over the last 30 years, Flagstaff has seen an average of about 84 inches of snow a year.

Angela Grubb, the marketing manager at the Arizona Snowbowl, says the 2023-2024 season was the longest season in history and the longest ski season in the state of Arizona. The mountain stayed open until June 1.

“We received 281 inches throughout whole season with 55 inches of those inches coming in April alone,” Grubb said. “It was incredible to be skiing in Arizona on June 1, you can’t beat it.”

Grubb says they are already working at the mountain to prepare for this upcoming season.

“As of right now, some of our mountain ops employees are out there and servicing our snow-making machines and getting ready to fire those up once the temperatures officially become cold enough,” Grubb said.

But when does it get cold enough?

“Usually that comes in late fall, late in October; so we will be able to start up our snow making machines. Once we’ve got those fired up, it’s really just hoping that Mother Nature keeps those temperatures cool that way we are able to make that snow and also brings in the natural snow as well,” she explained.

Arizona Snowbowl is set to open on Nov. 22
