Previewing Texas and Colorado State as 2024 football season opens
The American-Statesman’s Danny Davis, Cedric Golden and Thomas Jones preview UT’s game against Colorado State and answer a Texas trivia question.
Lee Corso thinks this is Texas football’s year.
The venerable former coach and ESPN commentator made an early prediction during his opening appearance on “College GameDay” Saturday to kick start Week 1 of the 2024 college football season.
Corso, beginning his 38th year on the show, picked Texas to beat Georgia in the national championship game and even flashed a “Horns Up” with his hands to emphasize the prediction in front of a big crowd on hand for this week’s episode at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

The Longhorns have been named a national champion in football nine times, according to the official NCAA record book. But they’ve only won one since 1981 when Vince Young and former coach Mack Brown led them to a title in 2005 during the Bowl Championship Series era. Corso picked USC and Ohio State to win the national championship the past two years, and neither made the playoff.
Texas, making its debut in the SEC in 2024, is ranked No. 4 in the US LBM preseason coaches poll after last year’s appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns feature Heisman Trophy contender Quinn Ewers at quarterback again this season.
They open the 2024 regular season with a home game against Colorado State on Saturday before traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face the defending national champion Wolverines on Sept. 7.
