Nick Saban has heard a lot about Ohio State’s roster and how its players have received around $20 million in name, image and likeness compensation.
On ESPN’s College GameDay, the former Alabama football coach shared his thoughts on Ohio State’s use of NIL funds for its 2024 roster.
“I just want to say, you guys keep talking about a $20 million roster,” Saban said. “If you don’t pay the right guys, you’ll be s— out of luck.”
The “College GameDay” desk burst out laughing, with former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit shaking Saban’s hand.

Expectations are sky high for Ohio State football in 2024. But Herbstreit doesn’t see an Ohio State roster that’s any better than Buckeye rosters of the past.
When previewing the Buckeyes’ 2024 season, talk turned to Ohio State’s three major transfer additions: safety Caleb Downs, quarterback Will Howard and running back Quinshon Judkins. But Herbstreit took a step back.
“What did they actually bring in?” Herbstreit asked.

While Herbstreit called Downs a “great safety,” he said Howard was a quarterback that had to “fight to keep his job at Kansas State,” while also calling Judkins “a backup running back at Ole Miss” who will make a “good tandem with TreVeyon Henderson.”
“I’ve looked at Ohio State’s roster over the past 10, 15 years. I don’t know if this roster is as good as some of the others,” Herbstreit said. “When was the last time Ohio State had like ‘Now they really have some talent?’ Are you saying Caleb Downs, Judkins and Howard are making this roster, ‘Oh my God, all chips in, they better win?’ I don’t see it.”
Ohio State opens the 2024 season against Akron on CBS at 3:30 p.m.
