The 2024 Iowa football season has finally arrived, full of excitement and anticipation as the Hawkeyes look to thrive in this new world of college football. Iowa kicks off the campaign against Illinois State inside Kinnick Stadium.
After going 12 consecutive quarters without a TD, Iowa finds the end zone on a 7-yard TD grab from freshman Reece Vander Zee and then again on Jacob Gill’s 31-yard reception. Vander Zee added another fourth-quarter TD, followed by a long run via Kaleb Johnson, and the Hawkeyes are cruising late with a 33-0 lead.

Incredible grab from Reece Vander Zee in traffic for his second TD grab of the day. He’s got four catches for 61 yards and two TDs. All drama has been removed from this one.
Long completion to Zach Ortwerth right before time expires that saw Cade McNamara impressively dodge intense pressure. Hawkeyes will have the ball at the 19-yard line when we return.
A 37-yard grab beat cornerback John Nestor, but Iowa locks in after Illinois State crosses midfield to force a turnover on downs.

There’s some offensive juice. Great heave from Cade McNamara finds a streaking Jacob Gill in the end zone. Beat double coverage too.
Five catches for 58 yards in Lachey’s return from a severe leg injury last season. He’s unsurprisingly been Cade McNamara’s favorite target.
A three-score deficit feels insurmountable for Illinois State. Hawkeyes past midfield after another defensive stop.

Hawkeyes can’t punch it in, but Drew Stevens drills the 28-yard field goal. Iowa will take it given how this first half has unfolded.

Five Hawkeyes had Illinois State punt returner Braden Contreras surrounded after his muffed the punt, but but Contreras somehow hops back on it. Illinois State backed up.
Iowa offense does nothing. Then the Illinois State offense does nothing. A riveting start, this is not.

Illegal block in the back on Lee takes Kaden Wetjen’s punt return TD off the board. Iowa starts at its own 31.

Redbirds pick up a couple first downs and moves past midfield, but Jermari Harris ends the momentum there with an interception right alongside the Illinois State sideline. Hawkeyes take over at its own 45.

Two short runs, then an incompletion thrown toward Luke Lachey. Illinois State will start at its own 26 after the TV timeout.
Three-and-out. The Time Lester era on offense will begin at the Iowa 35.
About ready to rock from Kinnick.
Either result will count on Kirk Ferentz’s record, not Seth Wallace’s.
One last Kinnick visit before the Bears’ season gets underway.
Our Chad Leistikow is hearing that running backs Kaleb Johnson and Jaz Patterson will both be suspended for the first half of today’s game for team violations. Kamari Moulton was already trending upward entering today and sounds like he’ll lead the workload to start.

Prediction: Iowa 31, Illinois State 7 … While it’s too much to expect a smooth operation for the offense in Week 1, the offensive line will control the line of scrimmage with 200-plus rushing yards. Freshman Kamari Moulton gets into the end zone and so does Lachey, as the Hawkeyes are able to get their second-teamers valuable game reps throughout the fourth quarter. And for the 10th straight Iowa game, the under (set at 40½) hits.
