It’s a Folsom Fumblerooski!
The Bulldogs pulled off an incredible broken-play touchdown on Friday night, some 20 seconds of seemingly controlled chaos that involved a lot of broken tackles, a fumble, a lateral, another lateral—offensive lineman with the ball alert!—and a race to the goal line as the seconds ticked down on the half.
Five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons—who has already demonstrated an uncanny skillset as an escape artist on the field—began the highlight-reel production, with running back Daymion Rivera finishing the wild scene in the end zone.
Watch the wild play unfold during the NFHS Network broadcast:
The unbelievable part about that TD? While it would cap off a 21-point comeback heading into halftime, the play wasn’t the headline of the game.
Junipero Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) winning the game, 22-21, took that honor.
The Padres were one of four teams to take down a nationally ranked power on Friday, proving they are still a force in NorCal (regardless of how many starters head coach Patrick Walsh had to replace).
In the end, it was a special teams masterclass that included an onside kick recovery and a 38-yard field goal from Aaron Minton to win it for the Padres — a team that has given a healthy shake to the current USA TODAY Sports Super 25.
For Folsom, it’s a bump in the road, but it is not the end for the Bulldogs. Not when you have a talented QB like Lyons.
At the very least, they’ll be in the Play of the Year conversation for the remainder of 2024.
