AIKEN COUNTY, Sc. (WJBF) – A globally recognized company is coming to Aiken County. Officials told us what they are looking forward to with this new partnership.
Governor Henry McMaster announced an $800 million deal with META to build a new Data Center in Sage Mill Industrial Park.
Meta data centers are part of the global infrastructure. The company powers services like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This will be the first center in South Carolina, the 22nd in the U.S., and the 26th in the world.
“This is the largest development we’ve had in Aiken County since the Bridgestone large tire plant. Also, at the Sage Mill Industrial Park. So, we’re very pleased that all these years of effort are coming to fruition,” said Gary Bunker, the Chairman of Aiken County Council.
The data center will support 100 new operational jobs and boost Aiken County economically. They plan to start building the center early next year with the goal of being operational in the spring of 2027.
“The number of jobs and the tax base that’s coming in it will be great for all of us. It’s really a win, win,” said the Vice Chairman of Aiken County Council, Andrew Siders.
The center in Aiken County will be focused on Metas Artificial Intelligence and will use 100% renewable energy.
“Cyber security being over at Fort Gordan that being one of the largest in the world and having meta come here it’s just a step up in the technology direction that I think is great for our county,” said Siders.
Meta is committed to hiring locally and working with local partners to create and sustain the data center.
“This area has a lot of knowledge-based workers, and we’re not totally clear yet as to what the actual jobs needs but if they will stay tuned,” said Will Williams, the President and CEO of Western SC Economic Development Partnership.
