ORONO, Maine (WABI) – It’s a busy day on UMaine’s campus as students arrive and are given a real Maine Hello.

“It’s just, it’s a fabulous day. We’re welcoming our new students. It’s the great Maine Hello that we offer to everybody as a hearty main Hello. And we’ve been over at the residence halls taking a look at how things are going there. We really want to be clear that this is a welcome, that we are initiating people into this community, bringing them here to enjoy this university. And it’s a it’s a joyful day, really. It’s fantastic,” said UMaine President, Joan Ferrini-Mundy.

And not it’s not just move-in day.

It’s a full week of activities to get them in the swing of the new semester.

“Our job is to extend the lifeline to say, welcome here. That to us. You matter to the world, you matter. So we’ll start that this weekend. This is New Student Orientation. So by the end of the weekend, we hope that students have new friend groups that they’re involved in, different activities, that they’ve gotten a sense of the campus. They feel that it’s their home. They feel as though this is a place that they belong. And starting on literally, tonight, we’ll start getting people engaged,” said Robert Dana, UMaine V.P. of Student Life and Dean of Students.

Also serving as a milestone for one’s college career.

“One of my favorite things is to be talking with them around commencement and remember them from when they came, and look at the incredible growth and confidence that they’ve developed. And so it’s it’s part of what’s wonderful about being in education,” said Ferrini-Mundy.

With over 700, volunteers helping things along, folks make it a special Maine Hello for past, present, maybe even future students.

“They love it here. It’s a beautiful place, and it’s a fine place for learning, and really it’s a fine place for mattering. And if you go around the state, you’ll find hundreds of thousands, of people thousands upon thousands and they say, I’m a black bear. And it meant a lot to them,” said Dana.
