HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Monetary and food donations poured in to the Hawaii Foodbank’s annual food drive which focused on nourishing Hawaii’s ohanas.
The nonprofit said the past weekend’s campaign raised nearly $274,000 and brought in over 32,000 pounds of food donations.
That’s enough to make more than 615,000 meals.
Nonprofit leaders said much of the support came in through monetary donations.
“It’s been a gradual shift with Food Drive Day, due to a variety of reasons,” said a spokesperson for the Hawaii Foodbank.
One reason being the shift toward online giving.
“I think it’s become really easy for folks to make an online donation (especially with this year’s match opportunity from First Hawaiian Bank, which helped motivate a lot of online giving). Additionally, it coincides with this operational shift we’ve experienced at the Foodbank since the pandemic – where a lot of our model has shifted to proactively purchasing food to keep our shelves stocked (which allows us to prepare for disasters, purchase foods at a far greater discount, and provide a larger variety of healthy/fresh and culturally important foods). With that shift, a lot of people have become more comfortable with making the monetary donations, as they’ve become more aware that the Foodbank can really stretch their dollars further to have the largest community impact.”
