FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (WJLA) — Two people were found shot and killed inside a Maryland home where four children live, Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said Tuesday.
Jenkins repeatedly called the shooting “a crime of rage and anger,” which resulted in the death of 33-year-old Crimea Baker, of New Market, Maryland, and 34-year-old Sean Lange, of Arlington, Virginia.
Several neighbors told WJLA they were distraught after learning the details behind the murders, but did not want to provide an interview because they were scared.
One neighbor who asked to conceal her identity said she vividly remembers the moment she learned about the shooting.
“Someone contacted me and asked if I was OK. I was very curious and concerned,” the neighbor said. “Everybody is just completely horrified and shocked, and saddened, too. It’s just a very sad situation.”
Officials said the shooting likely happened Sunday at around 1:30 a.m., adding that the couple was found in their bed hours later by one of the children. The children, who are all under the age of 13 years old, hid in the house until sometime around 7 a.m. when one of them called the authorities, according to officials.
“We believe, based on what the children told us, they hid in the house until morning until they felt safe, to try to figure out what had happened,” Jenkins said. “I can’t imagine what’s going through their minds. One of the children discovered his mother and the gentleman in the bed, dead, at the time. I can only say their lives are destroyed — is upside-down right now.”
Jenkins said Baker is the mother of all four children, one of whom she had with Lange.
Neighbors told WJLA they are now wondering what’s next for the children after experiencing such a traumatic incident.
“Clearly, it’s a significant trauma and a significant loss to these kids, and their whole world is being turned upside-down,” a neighbor said.
Jenkins did not describe the weapon used in the shooting, but said investigators recovered 42 .40 caliber shells, with damage found in and around the bed.
Jenkins said there is no threat to the public. He also said the suspect likely targeted the victims in a “crime of rage and passion.”
“This was really a heinous, targeted double murder, a crime of rage and anger. This is the type of crime that shocks the conscience of everyone in Frederick County,” Jenkins said.
Frederick County deputies are investigating with other local law enforcement agencies, and have not developed any suspects as of time of publication.
The children are now working with social services.
“I’m a therapist and I work with kids, so it breaks my heart to think of the trauma they must have witnessed and experienced,” the neighbor said. “My hope is they all end up in a place where they can get the help they need.”
