The new expanded College Football Playoff is here, and programs like Iowa are suddenly recalibrating season-long goals to include obtaining one of the 12 berths.
Can the Hawkeyes crack the initial 12-team field? That’s the most pertinent question amid all 2024 prognostications involving Iowa. Kirk Ferentz’s program has generated Playoff-caliber seasons in the past, but is one in the cards this season?
Let’s dive into the numerous preseason projections.
Can Iowa football make the 2024 College Football Playoff?
Ahead of Saturday’s season opener versus Illinois State, the Hawkeyes sit at +600 to make the College Football Playoff (courtesy of BetMGM). Some outlets, though, believe Iowa’s chances are better than that.
“The Big Ten will lead the way in CFP bids with four teams making the 12-team field,” CBSSports.com’s David Cobb writes.” But it won’t be the four teams that most expect: Iowa will ride a favorable schedule to 10 wins and crack the CFP.”
Of the eight CBS writers picking the Big Ten finishing order, Cobb and Will Backus have Iowa finishing the highest, at fourth. The other six have the Hawkeyes finishing either fifth or sixth in the Big Ten.
Elsewhere, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy has Iowa pegged as the No. 11 overall seed, playing at No. 6 seed Georgia in the CFP’s opening round. The Bulldogs are listed as a hypothetical 18.5-point favorite.
Other places the Hawkeyes are at least considered as a potential Playoff team include On3, The Athletic and our own Hawk Central projections.
