The Malik Willis era in Tennessee is over.
The Tennessee Titans are trading the quarterback to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, a source confirmed to The Tennessean on Monday.
The Titans picked Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Liberty and he started several games as a rookie, but failed to grab a hold of the position and was eventually replaced as the successor in the Titans’ quarterback room by Will Levis.
Willis competed as the Titans’ No. 3 quarterback throughout training camp behind Levis and Mason Rudolph.
Willis was 1-2 as a starter in his time with the Titans. He threw for 350 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in 11 games, adding 123 yards and a touchdown rushing. He helped lead the Titans to a 3-0 preseason this year, his first chance to perform in new coach Brian Callahan’s system, and particularly impressed in his final outing with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to clinch a 30-27 win Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
“It’s out of my hands,” Willis said Sunday night when asked how he’d handle the possibility of being cut or traded this week. “More than anything, I’m just controlling what I can control as far as all that goes. Just trying to do my best to put some good stuff on tape.”
“Malik really showed well for himself in that game,” Callahan added Monday. “I thought he played well. He put some really nice throws on tape. You still see his athleticism with the ball in his hand . . . I’m excited about what (Willis and Rudolph) have done and what that means. We keep three or we keep two and put one on a practice squad, or we just keep two. We’re continuing through those decisions over the next 48 hours. But they’ve certainly made that decision hard, and that’s their job.”
Levis and Rudolph are the only quarterbacks remaining on the Titans’ roster. The Titans will have to trim their roster to 53 players on Tuesday.
Willis, 25, joins a Green Bay quarterback room led by Jordan Love, who guided the team to a playoff appearance in his first full year as a starter in 2023 and was rewarded with a massive contract extension.
