COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer officially named LaNorris Sellers the starting quarterback for the season opener.
Beamer said Tuesday it will be Sellers starting against Old Dominion on Aug. 31 (4:15 p.m. ET, SEC Network). Beamer shared that Sellers responded with a simple, “ok” following the news, then it was back to practice.
“That’s just him,” Beamer said. “(Sellers) had a heck of a summer … he’s just been consistent, he continues to get better each week, his poise, his consistency, his understanding of what we are trying to do, he’s done what we’ve asked him to do coming out of spring practice.”
Beamer named Sellers the starting quarterback in May for preseason practices which began Aug. 2, and said he still had to compete against Robby Ashford to officially secure the job.
He won the job over Ashford and Davis Bellville, who according to Beamer during a press conference on Saturday, have been impressive this month, in addition to Sellers.
“I meant what I said on Saturday after the scrimmage, I really feel like we have multiple quarterbacks that we can win with,” Beamer said.
Spencer Rattler, now in the NFL, was the starting quarterback last season.
Beamer did not criticize Sellers or his performance at any point to local media during preseason press conferences but neither he or offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains announced him as a starter until Tuesday.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Sellers is from Florence and played in three games last season, but went a perfect 4-for-4 passing against Furman, and threw two touchdowns.
Ashford is a fifth year player who transferred to South Carolina in January, after spending two seasons at Auburn. He’s played in 22 games over his college career, and started in 10. Bellville is a graduate transfer who has played in 16 games across three seasons at Pittsburg and two seasons at Oklahoma.
