New Hampshire teenager Carys Fennessy had plans to watch this week’s FM Championship at TPC Boston from outside the ropes, most of the world’s best women’s golfers headed to Norton for the first time to compete for $3.8 million.
The two-time reigning New Hampshire Women’s Amateur champion won’t have to settle for watching. She’ll have a tee time after winning Monday’s qualifier for the final two spots in the star-studded field. Fennessy shot a 1-under 71 at TPC Boston, one better than Sarah Jane Smith of Australia.
Fennessy and Smith fill out the event’s lineup of 144, which includes Hall of Famers and 56 LPGA Tour winners, three with Massachusetts ties — Rockland’s Megan Khang, Westford’s Alison Walshe, and Alexa Pano, who grew up in Westborough.
They’ll be joined by Smith, a two-decade professional with a US Women’s Open top five in her record from 2018. Also, Fennessy, a rising Dover High senior who only reached Monday’s 11-for-2 event by winning a playoff Wednesday at Worcester Country Club, one of two to make it through a Mass Golf Invitational amateur qualifier.

The three-time New Hampshire high school state champion also won this summer’s New England Junior Amateur and New England Women’s Amateur. Her victories in the New Hampshire Women’s Am have each been dominant — by 15 shots two years ago, and by 18 this one.
A freak accident on the course two years ago nearly derailed her young career. Attending the 2022 US Open at The Country Club as a spectator, Fennessy was struck in the head by a wayward tee shot. Initially diagnosed with a concussion, her second in a four-month span, worsening symptoms later revealed a brain bleed. Fennessy didn’t require surgery, but did need speech and physical therapy.
She lost much of the 2022 summer golf schedule, but was competing again some six weeks later. In October 2023, she verbally committed to play Division 1 golf at the College of Charleston.
Westwood’s Lillian Guleserian, who shot a 2-under 68 in Worcester, shot 84 on Monday to finish ninth. She was the only other amateur in the qualifier beyond Fennessy, who will maintain her amateur status and not be eligible for any prize money this week.
