The shroud of joy
U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi has confirmed in published reports that because of her role in President Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race, “The country is very happy,” and “I did what I had to do. He made the decision for the country… My concern was not about the president, it was about his campaign.”
Now, thanks to Pelosi and friends, by writing a new playbook for manipulating the democratic process at the highest level, they have given every politician in the country a green light to somehow place and promote his/her favorite candidate at the top of any given ticket, without first getting the vote of “we the people.”
All done in a shroud of “joy,” to ensure a win, and to decide what is best for all of us.

Trump the biggest problem at the border
In his Aug. 15 letter, “Harris wants to make it easier to cross border,” Dennis Singleton showed a misunderstanding of the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act whose components Vice President Kamala Harris supports. This was a bipartisan bill with sponsors that included conservative Republican Sen. James Lankford.
With the backing of a significant number of other Republicans (as well as The National Border Patrol Council), the bill was on its way to passage until former President Donald Trump killed it to preserve an issue he could run on.
The bill would have built more border barriers, greatly expanded detention facilities, and added many more border patrol and enforcement agents, asylum officers and immigration judges.
It would have essentially ended the government’s “catch and release” policy and would have increased the standard of evidence needed to win asylum. The bill also would have supplied more funding to reduce fentanyl and human trafficking.
Despite claims to the contrary, it would NOT have increased the number of legal border crossings.
If Trump won’t support such steps, perhaps those who favor real border reform should consider a vote for Harris.

No new school levies unless voucher lawsuit joined
In school year 2023-24, members of our super majority Ohio Legislature approved over $900 million of public tax dollars to be awarded as vouchers for private school entities without any accountability on the part of private schools.
My question is this: Where is the outrage from every public-school board, superintendent and treasurer in the state of Ohio concerning this irresponsible and unconstitutional violation?
Proponents of this illegal legislative action falsely claim that vouchers are assisting the poor and disenfranchised to have the opportunity to attend private schools, but the statistics prove otherwise. The majority of the voucher giveaway dollars are being used by persons who have never attended a public school and can afford to send their children to private schools.
Citizens have every right to send their children to private schools, but not with tax dollars mandated for public schools.

The student population in many public schools in Ohio is growing exponentially. How can those districts that have not joined the Vouchers Hurt Ohio Lawsuit, inevitably, ask for additional levy money, when they have sat silently and not demanded that the Ohio legislature stop this free, unaccountable, public tax dollar giveaway?

COVID is indisputable
With the start of the school year, a reminder for politicians, school board members and teachers: Although the origin of the coronavirus that causes COVID is still debated, there is no debate about the origin of the variants.
They result from changes that occur in the coronavirus genetic sequence that make the virus more successful (fitter) at infecting and so reproducing and surviving in humans. This is so thoroughly documented that it provides an unparalleled and non-controversial teaching opportunity.
The existence and continued occurrence of new variants document and demonstrate in real time that evolution is a fact, not a theory.

Ohio definitely have blood suckers
I just ran across Nathan Hart’s August 12, article, “Upcoming Netflix doc ‘Vampires in Gem City’ alleges Ohio is home to a deadly coven,” and it got me to thinking. Ohio can now lay claim to U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, U.S. Senator JD Vance and a huge coven of vampires.
Coincidence? I think not.
After all, it can be said that they are all engaged in sucking the lifeblood of Ohioans on a regular basis.

Joe Biden is the “table setter”
President Joe Biden has nothing to be ashamed of by stepping aside. He has not stepped down, back or away.
In baseball we would identify Joe as a “table setter.”
He has reached base or was responsible for advancing a teammate. The table setter may have sacrificed himself by making an out after a sacrifice bunt, being out on a hit and run or grounding out after hitting behind the runner. He might even wiggle himself into the path of a 90-mile per hour fast ball to reach first base. “Take one for the team.”
The RBI producer gets the headlines but his teammates acknowledge the table setter, recognizing and appreciating his selflessness.
Joe is a table setter and good teammate.
He has sacrificed a late-life goal. We all hope to leave a positive legacy. Joe has built a full-life legacy of public service. Not many octogenarians have not receded to some degree in their physical and mental abilities. It takes courage to come to grips. But others are affected. Country before party.

Disparaging Democrats about voting beyond ridiculous
Philip Derrow’s column “Trump reaches out to the people of America (published online Aug. 1” made me laugh.
To think that Sen. JD Vance and former President Donald Trump speak for Ohio citizens is ludicrous.
Vance may pretend he represents Ohioans, but his rhetoric and policies don’t reflect that. His stated opinions do not align with the majority of Ohioans. You can bisect Ohioans into their demographics as he did in this column, but the fact is that he ignores a vast swath of voters who also happen to be citizens of Ohio.
Lancaster is a wonderful place, but it doesn’t represent all of Ohio.
The comment about how Vice President Kamala Harris became a candidate already is a well-worn talking point by Republicans.
I deeply appreciate their concern that liberals are appropriately represented as I am sure that is the only reason for their concern, but given the circumstances, why does anyone think that wouldn’t be the will of voters?
For him to disparage Democrats about voting and democracy is beyond ridiculous.
Who denied the verified results of the 2020 election? Who has passed multiple laws making it hard to vote? Republicans.

Meals-on-Wheels has ended the wait for food
Meals on Wheels America recently released a new strategic plan to “End the Wait.” Despite provisions within the Older Americans Act to support nutrition programs nationwide, 12 million seniors face food insecurity.
The plan cited some alarming statistics: federal funding only covers 37% of Meals on Wheels costs; volunteerism is at its lowest in two decades; only 1% of donations support senior causes; and one-third of Meals on Wheels organizations operate on a wait list.
This is not the case in central Ohio.
LifeCare Alliance Meals-on-Wheels enjoys the dedication of local officials, corporations and foundations across the region. Our 7,000 volunteers deliver nearly 70% of meal routes. And our supporters account for an amazing 53% of revenue.
Most notably, unlike other metropolitan areas, we have no wait list.
Central Ohio again leads the nation by doing what few have . . . we have ended the wait. As a lifelong resident, this makes me proud.
So, while I express my deepest appreciation — and enormous pride — in our community, I will ask you to continue supporting programs like ours that make Central Ohio the best place in America to work, play, and age in place.

Weird seems to be the word of the day used by our media lately. Free abortions and vasectomies, plus an 18-foot inflatable IUD outside of the Democratic National Convention, now that is weird.

Democrats, not Trump, trampling on democracy
During Joe Biden’s short-lived 2024 presidential campaign his major talking point was that Donald Trump was going to destroy America’s democracy.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and it is the DNC that trampled on the democratic election process.
The powers that run the Democratic Party forced a duly nominated candidate, President Joe Biden, to withdraw from the presidential race. Why?
Because after Biden’s poor debate performance they feared that Biden would lose the election to Donald Trump.
In Biden’s place a person who had not received one vote during the primary process was chosen to run against Donald Trump. Joe Biden received 87% of the 2024 democratic primary votes. He is the candidate the voters chose. That did not matter to the Democratic Party Political Machine. Biden had to go in spite of the 14,465,519 votes he received in the primaries. The voice of the people was not heard and democracy took a shot to the ribs.
Some might say Biden was replaced because of failing health. If that is true, why is he still the commander-in-chief?
