Signs at a political party convention, preprinted and passed out to delegates to wave, indicate the party’s priorities.
Crowds at the first night of the Democratic National Convention cheered and flashed USA signs in appreciation as speakers spoke about President Joe Biden’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’ healthcare policies and job creation.
When union leaders took the stage in Chicago to talk about the Biden administration’s pro-union measures, the signs switched to UNION YES.
When Harris appeared, WE FIGHT WE WIN signs came up fast. First Lady Jill Biden was greeted with green JILL signs. And when President Joe Biden took the stage late Monday evening, a sea of THANK YOU JOE signs were waiting.
This was a change from the signs displayed at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month when audience members waved signs saying MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, FIRE JOE BIDEN, AMERICA FIRST MEANS AMERICANS FIRST, TRUMP and TRUMP/VANCE, and MASS DEPORTATION NOW.
The difference was not lost on social media.
“The difference btwn the DNC and the RNC,” Dolores Pastor posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Democrats are cheering for the USA, a country where all feel included. The RNC holding up signs saying Mass Deportation cause they feel that they’re not like us.”
“The DNC holding USA signs and chanting USA USA USA is sure a contrast with the signs and chants at that other convention,” Nancy Baym posted on BlueSky.
USA TODAY’s Rex Huppke noticed, too.
Critics mock the DNC
Not everyone thought the positivity of the DNC was appropriate or warranted.
And not all the differences were political.
