BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A team at Louisiana State University and Southern University have been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to address cybersecurity flaws in electric vehicle charging stations.
According to a news release, LSU cybersecurity expert Elias Bou-Harb and his team discovered that these vulnerabilities present significant risks, including the chance for hackers to access and exploit tens of thousands of EV charging stations connected to the grid.
“Attacks on electric vehicle charging systems could potentially destroy cars by overloading batteries, leak credit card and other personal data from users, and disrupt the nation’s power and transportation infrastructure,” LSU said in a news release.

To resolve this issue, LSU and Southern University teamed up for a project to protect the nation’s electric vehicle infrastructure, according to a news release. The project will create new academic courses and hands-on labs.
“This grant represents a transformative opportunity for our students,” said Krutthika Hirebasur Krishnappa, assistant professor of computer science at Southern. “It will provide them with access to cutting-edge resources, training, mentorship, graduate programs and careers in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity.”
“By leveraging the strengths and expertise of both Southern University and LSU, we can drive significant advancements in cybersecurity education and research,” Krishnappa said. “This will benefit not only our students but also the broader community and industry.”
