Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo plans to go on the air next week in Colorado’s battleground 8th Congressional District with a TV ad highlighting the Thornton pediatrician’s community roots and willingness to work across the aisle, her campaign told Colorado Politics.
The 30-second spot, set to start airing on Aug. 27 on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms, is part of her campaign’s $3.7 million fall advertising reservation, a campaign spokesman said.
Carveo is facing Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans of Fort Lupton in her bid for a second term representing the closely divided district, which covers parts of Adams, Larimer and Weld counties north of the Denver metro area. In 2022, Caraveo defeated her Republican opponent by 1,632 votes in one of the closest congressional races in the country.
“My parents raised the four of us right here,” Caraveo says in the new TV ad, over a montage of family photos. “All we had was my dad’s pay as a construction worker. These days that would be impossible. That’s why I’ve always worked with both parties to help Coloradans deal with rising costs.”
Caraveo says that includes expanding free kindergarten and preschool, cutting wasteful spending and taxes paid by working families, and capping the cost of some prescription medicines.
“Colorado families deserve every opportunity to get ahead,” she says.

Caraveo has taken heat from fellow Democrats for occasionally voting with Republicans, including supporting a recent House resolution condemning Vice President Kamala Harris for failing to secure the southern border. Caraveo endorsed Harris’ presidential candidacy last month, hours after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, but didn’t attend this week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, saying she was focused on her reelection bid and constituents.
“This multimillion dollar reservation is only possible because of Congresswoman Caraveo’s grassroots efforts as she continues to deliver results for working families in Colorado,” Caraveo’s campaign manager, Mary Alice Blackstock, told Colorado Politics in a statement. “From lowering the costs of prescription drugs to curbing wasteful spending, Congresswoman Caraveo is a problem-solver in a political climate where extreme Republicans are troublemakers.”
Added Blackstock: “As far-right Republicans continue to push us back, Congresswoman Caraveo is moving Colorado forward.”
Evans said in an emailed statement that the ad won’t fool voters.
“Yadira Caraveo can run but she can’t hide from her extreme left-wing record, which has spawned Colorado’s crime wave, an 800% increase in fentanyl deaths in Colorado, and a skyrocketing cost of living for working families,” Evans said. “Colorado voters won’t be hoodwinked by her expensive television ads funded by California, New York, and DC millionaires and special interests. Voters are ready for change in November.”
Evans has reserved at least $2.1 million for general election ads, according to TV ad tracker reports that show the Republican’s commercials are set to start airing in mid-September on English and Spanish-language stations. Caraveo’s campaign said she plans to advertise on Spanish-language radio and air TV ads in Spanish starting in October.
The 8th CD, Colorado newest House seat, was drawn ahead of the 2022 election and has the state’s largest concentration of Hispanic and Latino voters, and both Caraveo and Evans are descendants of Mexican immigrants.
According to campaign finance reports filed in July, Caraveo headed into the general election with a big cash advantage over her Republican challenger. Evans raised just over $1 million and had almost $533,000 in the bank, while Caraveo’s total fundraising topped $4.5 million, leaving her with almost $3.5 million on hand.
National Republican and Democratic campaign and political action committees have reserved nearly $13 million in fall TV ads targeting the race, which is among the most competitive House seats in the country, according to election analysts.
