A tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning when a portion of a rock ledge collapsed onto an excavator, burying a worker inside at a quarry site in Massachusetts.
First responders, including firefighters and rescue agencies, were dispatched to the location. They used camera equipment to assess the scene and confirmed no signs of life, according to fire officials in Sterling, located about 40 miles west of Boston.
The worker was pronounced dead at 8:39 a.m. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. The US Department of Labour’s Mine Safety and Health Administration is currently inspecting the site to determine the next steps for retrieval efforts.
The Sterling Fire Department announced that it, along with other agencies, was actively working at the site off Chocksett Road and urged the public to avoid the area for safety reasons.
Onyx Corporation, which operates the quarry, has shut down all its locations from Thursday through the weekend, with plans to resume business on Monday.
An individual reached at the business declined to provide additional information. In an online post, the company detailed that it transforms rocks into aggregate materials for infrastructure purposes like roads and drainage.
