A University of Tennessee at Knoxville professor’s new book tells the story of the Old West through Red Dead Redemption 2, and has become a hit among fans of the video game, as well as with history buffs.
Author Tore Olsson is an associate professor at UT and director of the school’s graduate studies in history. His book, “Red Dead’s History: A Video Game, an Obsession, and America’s Violent Past,” is an adaptation of his popular class “American History through Video Games.”
Made by Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in 1899 and follows Arthur Morgan, a robber on the run across America with his fictional gang. As the game progresses, Morgan travels through the West, the Deep South and Southern Appalachia.
Olsson’s book uses the game as a gateway to analyze historical topics related to each region, using real historical context and sources.
Union Ave Books hosted an Aug. 15 event for the book at the East Tennessee History Center. The event featured a conversation with the author and the premiere of “Shooting for an A: Video Games and Education,” a short documentary by UT’s Land Grant Films about Tore’s class, book and the making of the audiobook with actor Roger Clark, who portrays Arthur Morgan in the game.
Olsson said the audiobook reached No. 1 in “Computer & Video Game Strategy Guides” category on Amazon, and the hardcover reached No. 1 in the “U.S. Civil War History” category.
“The past few weeks, leading up to and including the publication week, have been truly unbelievable,” Olsson told Knox News via email. “Getting to speak to a crowded room of 500 at San Diego Comic-Con alongside my audiobook narrator Roger Clark was a dream come true. So was signing books for many dozens of fans at the convention, and hearing about how video games have spurred such fascination in so many people for grappling with American history.”
The hardcover edition is available now in stores and online.
