On Saturday, August 24, from 10 to 11 a.m., Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Historic Prison Preservation Society, will speak on “The Great and Not So Great Escapes.”
Prisons are supposed to be secure keepers of society’s wrongdoers, but that is not always the case. The Nevada State Prison in Carson City has had its share of escapes in its 150 year history. The incidents have been tragic, exciting, ludicrous, and disturbing, and are a reflection of the physical deficiencies of the historic stone structure, as well as the incompetence of its staff and administrators.
This presentation will cover the great escape of 1871; the longest escape and recapture in the history of the United States. Interspersed will be tales of inmate characters, staff heroes and bunglers , often considered Nevada history in its most troubling form.
Glen Whorton began his career as an Officer Trainee in the Department of Prisons and retired after thirty-two years of service. Whorton’s last position was Director of the Department. He has additional experience as an Army Aviator, Community College Instructor, Ombudsman for the Nevada Attorney General, and Hearing Representative for the Nevada Parole Board.
This event is free for all to attend.
