LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – With just a few days removed from the 2024 Paris Olympics, many of the best archers from around the United States- and the world- have gathered together at the Berl Huffman Sports Complex for the 140th Target Nationals and U.S. Open. This includes Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold, who are coming back from France with more hardware and prestige to their resume.

In the meantime, there are some still archers looking forward to their time on the international stage this summer. For Eric Bennett, Tracy Otto, Jason Tabansky, and Jordan White- Lubbock is just a stop for them on their way to this year’s Paralympic Games. Along with Kevin Polish and Matt Stutzman, they will board a plane for their chance to take their bows and arrows to Invalides.

While KCBD staff interviewed USA Archery’s CEO Rod Menzer, he encouraged fans to watch this month’s Paralympic Games – just as they would for the Olympics.

“Unfortunately, Paralympics never gets as much press as the Olympic Games. It needs to,” he said. “These athletes are incredible, and our athletes are here (in Lubbock), and they’re going literally from here-pretty much straight over to Paris, and they’re going to competing with USA on their back.”

The Paris Paralympics begin Wednesday, August 28 with the opening ceremony. Events will be made available in their entirety on Peacock, and featured programming that can be seen at various times on KCBD-TV.

“And we need to really, really watch. We need to follow the games,” the USA Archery CEO says, “We need to support those athletes and literally celebrate it when you see it, when you see it on TV, please watch, check it out and make sure that everything that you’re doing is supporting all of our athletes in the US”.

During the interview, Menzer says he has high hopes for all of the American adaptive athletes- from both the target range and beyond.

“I guarantee you, there will not be any country that will have more medals than the United States in the Paralympics, and I’m pretty sure we’re going to have some medals for U.S. Archery and our Paralympians.”
