Video: John Nestor on what he brings to the field for Iowa football
Defensive back John Nestor discusses a variety of topics at Iowa football media day on August 9, 2024.
By now, it’s no secret that Iowa’s offense has struggled in recent years, especially the last two seasons.
It’s one of several questions that will have eyes following it closely as Tim Lester takes over as Iowa’s offensive coordinator, replacing Brian Ferentz. Iowa finished as the second-worst passing offense in the Big Ten last season under Ferentz, finishing with about 1,600 passing yards and only nine passing touchdowns.
Another question is Hawkeyes’ quarterback Cade McNamara, who returns to Iowa’s offense for his graduate-student year after sustaining a season-ending injury early on last season. McNamara was recently added to the preseason watch list for both the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Comeback Player of the Year awards.

“I had a little bit of happy feet. I’m not going to lie. I dropped back and … It went a little fast,” McNamara said at Hawkeyes Media Day on Aug. 9 on how he felt returning to practice the first day of training camp. “It’s obviously slowed down a bit and the more reps the better for me. Just to be out there, I mean emotionally, it was like, I didn’t skip a beat when it came to calling the play in the huddle.”
The upcoming 2024 season marks the second season that McNamara will play under center for Kirk Ferentz’s squad after transferring from Michigan to Iowa following the 2022 season. The Wolverines went with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback in 2022 after the two battled for the starting spot in the first two games of the season, leading to McNamara entering his name into the transfer portal. McNamara also sustained a leg injury in 2022 at Michigan in Week 3 that kept him out for the remainder of that season.
With the Hawkeyes’ opener just two weeks away, here’s what you need to know about McNamara’s career stats heading into the 2024 college football season:
Cade McNamara career stats
McNamara’s first season with the Hawkeyes in 2023 was cut short after sustaining a season-ending injury in Iowa’s fifth game of the season vs. Michigan State. Prior to sustaining his injury, McNamara completed 46 of his 90 passing attempts for 505 passing yards — the most he threw for since his sophomore season at Michigan in 2021 — with four passing touchdowns.
The Reno, Nevada, native’s best season came in 2021 at Michigan, when he completed 199 of 308 passing attempts for 2,470 passing yards with 15 touchdowns. McNamara, who split time with McCarthy in the College Football Playoff semifinal vs. Georgia, led the Wolverines to a 12-1 overall record and a Big Ten Conference championship in 2021.
