A malfunctioning cellphone battery led to significant fire damage at a North Omaha house early Thursday morning.
Shortly before 3 a.m., Omaha firefighters responded to the fire near 42nd and Franklin Streets. They saw heavy smoke emitting from a house, according to a press release. The house’s occupants had evacuated the house prior to firefighters arriving. Firefighters rescued a dog, who was unharmed. Firefighters got the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
The Omaha Fire Department said the cause of the fire was traced to a malfunctioning cellphone battery and the fire was an accident. The fire caused about $50,000 in structural damage. Another $14,500 worth of contents were also lost.
The North Omaha house fire came nearly six hours after another house fire significantly damaged a home in northwest Omaha.

Shortly before 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters went to a house near 120th Street and Military Road. They found smoke coming from the front of the house. All of the house’s occupants evacuated the home prior to firefighters arriving. Firefighters got the fire under control in about five minutes.
The fire’s cause was traced to unattended cooking. The fire caused about $50,000 in structural damage. About $12,500 worth of contents was also lost.
