Carl Marlinga | Ken Coleman
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced on Wednesday that it would back former Judge Carl Marlinga in his rematch against sitting U.S. Rep. John James (R-Shelby Twp.).
As Marlinga and James vie for control of Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, the DCCC has added Marlinga to its “Red to Blue” program, pledging organizational and fundraising support as Marlinga seeks to flip James’ seat for Democrats.
Marlinga lost by a slim, 1,600 vote margin in 2022, with the 10th District potentially serving as yet another competitive district as Democrats seek control of the U.S. House.
“Folks here in Macomb and Oakland are dealing with high costs, yet John James is just taking money from special interests and doing their bidding in Washington. I’ve worked for people here in Michigan as a clean water advocate, a prosecutor and a judge, and I’m ready to continue to fight for my community in Congress,” Marlinga said in a statement.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the district as a Republican lean.
“John James is a MAGA extremist who puts his dangerous agenda ahead of his constituents. He has compared abortion to ‘genocide’ and has a plan to gut Social Security and Medicare,” DCCC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene said in a statement, referencing James’ membership in the Republican Study Committee whose Fiscal Year 2025 budget proposal included cuts to Medicare and proposed tying the eligibility age for Social Security to life expectancy.
“While James wants to send women and doctors to jail, Carl Marlinga spent his career making Michigan safer. As a former prosecutor and judge, Carl will prosecute the case against James and help us flip the House in November,” DelBene said.
The James campaign did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.
