SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — People who live in the City of Syracuse will be getting letters in the mail with important information about test results from drinking water in a small number of homes.
Drinking water at 27 houses, sporadically located across Syracuse, have tested positive for lead at a level that the EPA requires the City of Syracuse to notify its customers.
While new for the City of Syracuse, the discovery is somewhat common for cities with aging infrastuctures.
Every six months, the city sends out water sample test kits to volunteering homes that are serviced by lead pipes. In these cases, otherwise clean drinking water passes through the lead pipes at either city pipes under the street or the home’s plumbing.
“Action Level” is 15 parts per billion. Some test results in Syracuse came back at 70 parts per billion.
“Their water’s perfectly fine,” the city’s interim water commissioner tells NewsChannel 9. “We have phenomenal water in the City of Syracuse. It comes from Skaneateles Lake from through our mains, which are all lead free. The homes have had lead for 100 years.”
The city has suggestions for those who are concerned, including using cold water and running the water to cycle the pipes before consumption.
People can also choose to filter their water through devices such as a Brita pitcher.
The city isn’t even convinced the test results are accurate. Re-testing is being offered to impacted homeowners.
The city typically mitigates lead infiltration by coating the pipes with orthophosphate that’s added to the water upstream. That treatment will continue and increasing the amount is being tested.
Interim Commissioner Robert Brandt said: “You can’t even put us in the same conversation as Flint, Michigan. Our water is clean and pure.
14,000 homes in Syracuse get their water through city-owned pipes made of lead. An unknown number of homes have lead plumbing.
