The Beaumont and Redlands football teams are ready to say “Aloha” to the 2024 high school football season.
The two Citrus Belt League squads are headed to Hawaii this week for their season openers Thursday night in Honolulu. The teams will participate in a doubleheader, with Beaumont squaring off against Kamehameha Maui at 5 p.m. local time (8 p.m. PDT) and Redlands scheduled to play host school Radford immediately after at 7:30 p.m. local time (10:30 PDT).
The Redlands traveling squad left for the island of Oahu on Tuesday morning. Beaumont will leave Wednesday morning.
Beaumont and Redlands are among six CIF Southern Section football teams getting a head start on the new campaign. Viewpoint, Sierra Canyon and Mission Viejo also play in Hawaii this week, while Simi Valley is heading to Sparks, Nev.
Bob Stangel has been planning for an out-of-state journey since the day he was handed the reins of the program in 2022.
“It seems to have become the thing to do and is more common every year,” Redlands athletic director Eric Memory said about playing out-of-state games. “I really like the idea. It gives the kids an experience that they will always remember.”
Beaumont coach Jeff Steinberg looks to take his teams out of state every two years, and the Cougars played a game in St. George, Utah, last year. The opportunity to go to Hawaii this season presented itself, and planning was fast-tracked.
Playing a “Week 00” game created a rather unique situation, as the two league foes faced off in a scrimmage last week.
“It’s a little bizarre, but there weren’t many other options out there,” Steinberg said about the scrimmage against a league opponent.
Redlands hosts Beaumont in Citrus Belt League action when the teams square off in the regular-season finale Oct. 31.
In addition to practices and their games, Beaumont and Redlands have plenty of activities and site-seeing planned into their schedules, including trips to Pearl Harbor and Queens Beach. And both teams will be attend a luau along the way.
Redlands will be returning home Saturday, while Beaumont heads back Sunday morning.
“I know the kids are really excited about this experience, and that’s exactly what you want to give them,” Steinberg said. “Most of kids have never been to Hawaii, so this will be a lot of fun for them. It really is a great way to kick off a season.”
