A distinctive Alabama hotel with just 10 suites has been picked as the nation’s best boutique hotel by voters in USA Today’s 10Best survey.
The GunRunner Hotel in Florence was identified as one of 20 finalists in the competition back in July. Results were revealed Wednesday, and the hotel didn’t just make the final 10: It came in at No. 1.
“Drawing inspiration from the storied Shoals area, the GunRunner Hotel has 10 spacious suites — seven with private balconies — that celebrate the history and people of the region,” said the article’s thumbnail description. “GunRunner’s Guests can also take advantage of the top-notch services and treatments offered at the GunRunner Spa.”
The GunRunner takes its name from a pawn shop that once occupied its space at 310 E. Tennessee St. in downtown Florence. Each suite has a theme reflecting Shoals-area history. For example, suites celebrate the University of North Alabama, the Muscle Shoals Sound studio, music pioneer Sam Phillips and even famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. (The only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Alabama is in Florence and is operated as a museum.)
The rest of the Top 10 is rounded out with some similarly distinctive hostelries, though at least a couple – the 122-room Staypineapple Chicago (No. 3) and the 133-room Beaufort Hotel in North Carolina – seem maybe a tad big for the “boutique” designation.
USA Today says that in its 10Best surveys, “Nominees are submitted by a panel of experts. 10Best editors narrow the field to select the final set of nominees for the Readers’ Choice Awards.”
