SALA NEWS RELEASE
The Second Annual Oppenheimer Festival in Los Alamos is honored to present a special event this Saturday, offering an immersive experience where history, film, and dialogue intersect. Join us at the SALA Los Alamos Event Center for an exclusive evening that delves into the powerful, untold story of the Trinity nuclear test and its lasting impact on New Mexico’s communities.
Event Details:
Date: Saturday, August 17, 2024
Time: 5:00 PM Dinner Reception, 6:00 PM Film Screening and Q&A
Location: SALA Los Alamos Event Center, 2551 Central Avenue, Los Alamos, NM 87544
The evening will begin with a dinner reception featuring Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Lois Lipman and New Mexico Hispanic cancer survivor and activist Tina Cordova, co-founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium. They, along with several other key figures featured in the documentary First We Bombed New Mexico, will engage with attendees, sharing their experiences and insights.
Joining this event will be Senator Leo Jaramillo, the New Mexico legislator representing District 5, which includes Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, and Santa Fe counties. Senator Jaramillo’s participation underscores the importance of this dialogue in the broader context of New Mexico’s history and future.
Following the reception, there will be a screening of First We Bombed New Mexico, a film that reveals the little-known consequences of the world’s first nuclear bomb detonation at the Trinity site. The film explores the government’s betrayal and the tragic legacy of radioactive fallout that affected thousands of New Mexicans, primarily Hispanic and Native American, who were exposed without warning, acknowledgment, or assistance.
Post-Screening Q&A: The screening will be followed by a Q&A session, allowing the audience to engage directly with the filmmakers and subjects of the film. This dialogue will provide a deeper understanding of the complex legacy of the Manhattan Project and its ongoing impact on communities today.
Quote from Allan Saenz, Organizer of the Oppenheimer Festival: “I am honored to have this film in our Second Annual Oppenheimer Festival and to share their voices at the SALA Event Center.”
About the Film: Directed by Lois Lipman, First We Bombed New Mexico brings to light the multigenerational health crises and environmental devastation that have persisted since the Trinity test. Tina Cordova has been a leading voice in the movement seeking justice and compensation for the affected families, making this film not only a historical document but also a call to action.
Quote from Tina Cordova: “The Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium wants to thank Allan Saenz and the SALA Events Center for hosting our film in Los Alamos. We are hopeful that many people from all across Los Alamos and northern New Mexico will embrace this award-winning film and join us for a glimpse into the lives of those who lived downwind of where our government mined, developed, and tested the Trinity bomb.”
