Next tropical system could form just days after the end of Debby
Forecasters say a new tropical depression could be named in the Caribbean following the conclusion of Tropical Storm Debby.
The newest tropical wave in the Atlantic has officially formed, and the disturbance is now Potential Tropical Cyclone Five.
The storm originated several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands — the same area as Hurricane Beryl.

It is the second disturbance forecasters have tracked since the development of Debby, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Florida last Monday, then a second landfall as a tropical storm in South Carolina mid-week. The deadly storm brought historic rainfall from Florida to the Carolinas.
If Potential Tropical Cyclone Five develops into a tropical depression and then strengthens into a storm, it will be named Ernesto, making it the fifth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Will Texas be impacted by Potential Tropical Cyclone 5?
Potential Tropical Cyclone Five is “moving rapidly westward,” and the National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for Puerto Rico and the nearby islands, according to its latest advisory. The disturbance is expected to develop as it reaches the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and remain a tropical storm as it makes landfall in Puerto Rico early Wednesday.
It is unlikely that Potential Tropical Cyclone Five will impact Texas or any part of the contiguous United States.
The newest storm comes as government officials have described as “an early and violent start” to the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which will continue for several months.
The new seasonal outlook calls for an “extremely active” remainder with 17 to 24 named storms, of which eight to 13 will spin up into hurricanes, according to USA TODAY. An average year sees 14 named storms, of which seven are hurricanes.
The new forecast comes after two deadly storms made landfall on coastal states this year, including the deadly Hurricane Beryl and Hurricane Debby, which made landfall in Florida early last week and continues to pass over the East Coast.
