Alabama first responders return after being deployed to South Carolina for Tropical Storm Debby

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WBRC) -Local first responders are back home after helping our neighbors in South Carolina deal with Tropical Storm Debby.

The Alabama Task Force 2 made up of firefighters from Mountain Brook, Homewood and Rocky Ridge were assigned to Ridgeville, SC to prepare for possible water rescues due to heavy rains from Debby. They kept watch over a river using two swift water rescue boats and an off road utility vehicle.

At one point, the team helped out people in a van who were surrounded by flood waters. Thankfully, they were able to get the people to safety.

Justin Coleman with the Mountain Brook Fire Department tells us they are grateful for the opportunity to help those in need.

“Even though we’ve never met these other agencies and departments, when we come together and start working, it’s immediate. We all know exactly what the needs are and we all know what the goals are. We all know how to work together. It’s just great. They’ve taken good care of us up here. I hope that we never have that need but I know that if we do, we have neighbors close by that can help us,” Coleman, AL Task Force 2’s division leader said.

The task force worked alongside Dorchester County agencies and the South Carolina National Guard. We’re told other members from Task Force 2 were deployed to Florida prior to their activation and have since returned home as well.
