The state of Florida is home to nearly 1,000 high school football teams.
That means on any given Friday, there are roughly 500 games taking place around the state.
And those games will begin with preseason jamborees this week leading up to the regular season, which for most begins Friday, Aug. 23.
After that, it’s an 11-week and 10 regular-season game sprint toward the playoffs.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
High school football kicks off a glorious time of year.
Everyone is undefeated. Hope springs eternal. And it’s USA Today’s Florida Sports Network recruiting reporter Jon Santucci’s time to shine.
Jon has been traversing the state covering all the major recruits, teams and everything else dealing with high school football.
Jon is the latest guest on “The *State* of Florida Sports Podcast,” powered by the USA TODAY Network.
With 17 news sites in the state of Florida, no one can give you the comprehensive coverage like that provided by USA TODAY’s Florida Sports Network.
Those areas include: Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Brevard, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, Stuart, West Palm Beach, Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Lakeland, Leesburg, Ocala, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Panama City, Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola.
Jon will tell us about some of the reporting he’s done over the past three weeks leading up to this week’s preseason games.
He’ll talk about changes made by the FHSAA for the 2024 season, including reverting back to classifications instead of splitting teams into suburban and metro, the way it had been the past two seasons. He’ll bring us up to speed on that and other changes.
He’ll give us his thoughts on NIL and how we’re already seeing violations around the state. It’s a muddled mess, but he’ll try to explain the rules and guidelines.
He’ll tell us about the top players in Florida, who are the fived-star players, and where they are committed to play college football and much more.
And he’ll give his breakdown of the recruiting classes of Florida, Florida State, Miami and UCF.
