As the sun sets Saturday on Paris, Team Utah 2034 will take to the streets for the first-ever Marathon Pour Tous (marathon for all). Utah Sen. Mike McKell, of Spanish Fork, and former BYU runner Anna Camp-Bennett, of Fillmore, will be among nearly 50,000 runners who will tackle the Olympic marathon course or a special 10k.
As a future Games host, Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 was awarded one spot in each race. Over 400,000 runners around the world sought qualifying berths. A field representing 110 countries is expected, with 24,024 in each race. Wave starts in the Marathon Pour Tous will begin at 9 p.m. Paris time, running the full marathon course, with the 10k waves kicking off at 11:30 p.m. on a shorter course through the city.
Fans can follow the marathon live on Saturday at marathonpourtous.paris2024.com. The marathon begins at 1 p.m. Utah time Saturday with the 10k at 4 p.m.
McKell, a passionate runner, is the co-chair of the Utah Legislature’s Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Coordination Committee. He will run in the marathon.
Camp-Bennett, who will take a spot in the 10k event, was part of BYU’s 2020 (run in 2021) NCAA champion cross country team, and won the 2021 NCAA 1,500 meter outdoor title.
Earlier Saturday, the Olympic marathon will cover the same course from Hotel de Ville to Invalides. Utah will be well represented in that race, as well, with Team USA’s Clayton Young and Conner Mantz, both former BYU stars.
It has already been a strong week for Utah runners with BYU’s Kenneth Rooks taking silver Wednesday in the 5,000 meter steeplechase. Grant Fisher, who moved to Park City to train, won bronze in the 10,000 meters last Sunday.
The Utahns’ success, in part, can be traced to the Run Elite Program. Started in 2022, the program helps enable young runners with the resources necessary to reach their potential on and off the track. Camp-Bennett, Fisher, Mantz, Rooks, and Young have all been supported by the program. Other Olympians in Paris supported by Run Elite Program include James Corrigan (steeplechase), Whittni Morgan (5,000m) and Courtney Wayment (steeplechase). McKell has been one of the many champions in the running community who have helped it grow.
One of the Run Elite Program founders, Jared Ward, qualified individually to run in the marathon. Ward finished sixth in the 2016 Olympic marathon in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
