Republicans are sharing a video clip of a verbal slip by U.S. Sen. John Fetterman to falsely claim that he thinks former President Donald Trump will win Pennsylvania.
In an 8-minute interview on Wednesday with host Greta Van Susteren on the far-right Newsmax network, Fetterman, a Democrat, insisted several times that he believes that Vice President Kamala Harris will win the state this November.
About 3 minutes and 10 seconds into the interview Fetterman says, “I fundamentally believe that Harris is going to be able to carry Pennsylvania regardless of whoever she has chosen to be her running mate.”
A few seconds later, though, Fetterman says, “I do believe he’s going to win Pennsylvania.”
It was an obvious verbal mistake, considering that Fetterman repeatedly said during the interview that he thought Harris “will prevail” in Pennsylvania.
That, however, did not stop the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee’s @RNCResearch account on X/Twitter from sharing a 17-second clip of Fetterman’s stumble without any context and making it seem as if he thinks Trump will win the state.
“WE AGREE FETTERMAN: ‘If you match up Trump and Harris … I do believe he’s gonna win Pennsylvania,’ @RNCResearch posted with the clip.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which first reported about the so-called “cheap fake” video clip, also described how a far-right social media strategist named Chuck Callesto shared the video and added, “JUST IN: Fetterman makes bold prediction, says TRUMP will win Pennsylvania…”
Callesto’s post had over 862,000 views by Friday afternoon. Coupled with the @RNCResearch post, which had nearly 154,000 views, the video had been viewed more than 1 million times.
PennLive sought comment from the RNC/Trump campaign and Fetterman’s office, but did not receive immediate responses.
