PARIS — It was a fitting scene for an Olympic final. An all-time great in Brazil’s Marta, at the tail end of her career, symbolically passing the torch to the next generations of women’s soccer stars.
Portland Thorns star Sophia Smith and U.S. teammate Mallory Swanson were the closest replicas of a prime-aged Marta on the pitch Saturday, firing a combined four shots on net as the team’s youthful front line led the Americans over Brazil 1-0 for the gold medal. Swanson in the 57th minute netted the only goal of the game for the Americans, but Smith was also standing wide-open right next to her on the play.
