Regarding “Editorial: Moderation wins over extremism, on left and right, in Missouri primaries. Good.” (Aug. 8): Rep. Cori Bush may have deserved her defeat by Wesley Bell, as she showed a propensity to support organizations far removed from North County and its pressing needs. But the degree to which the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) provided financial support should give the average American voters pause.
I suspect few in her district can find Gaza on a map, or discuss the post “League of Nations Mandate” and subsequent (complicated) evolution of the State of Israel created in 1948.
Frankly they should not have to. They are supposed to elect a member of Congress to represent them, not a special-interest group allied with the interests of a foreign government. No lobbying group should be able to usurp that process by providing overwhelming financial support to a particular candidate for U.S. public office.

If AIPAC wants to lobby the U.S. government, let them do so in the halls of Congress like everyone else. They should not stifle the voices of our representatives by threatening to deep fund their opponents in our supposedly free and fair elections.
To be clear, the problem is not just Israel, but money. And who has the most. If this is how it works, why not just auction off our seats and save us the cost and trouble of an election?
Cori Bush’s husband introduces her and she gives her concession speech after losing the race for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District to opponent Wesley Bell on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024.
