PARIS, France — Olmsted Falls graduate Katie Moon will try to repeat as a gold medal winner today in the women’s pole fault finals.
Moon on Monday secured her spot in the finals as she cleared 4.55 meters (about 14.9 feet). She is one of 20 women who will participate in today’s finals, which will start at 12:15 p.m. EST.
Moon said on Monday that she felt “amazing” even though she has been dealing with a sore heel.
“Unfortunately, it’s something that will never be fully gone until I give it time to just rest,” she said. “But it’s very manageable, and I’m finally at a point where I’m jumping off it consistently.”
Gabrielle Thomas sped to the victory in the women’s 200 meters, finishing in 21.83 seconds to add a gold to the bronze she took home in the event from Tokyo three years ago. Thomas was never challenged down the stretch, finishing well clear of 100-meter champion Julien Alfred of St. Lucia (22.08). Brittany Brown of the U.S. got the bronze in 22.20.
“I feel like I’ve worked very hard, and everything has been a part of the plan. This has been a six-year plan, ever since moving to Texas,” Thomas said afterward. “We’ve been working hard every day for this, so I earned it. But it’s still an unbelievable, indescribable feeling.”
American Noah Lyles, the gold medal winner in the 100 meters, easily won his heat in the men’s 200 meter qualifying round and will compete in the semifinals today, USA Today reports.
In the men’s 1,500 meters final, American Cole Hocker set a world record with 3:27.65. The previous Olympics record of 3:28.32 was set at the Tokyo Games in 2021 by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, USA Today reports.
Josh Kerr of Great Britain won silver with 3:27:79, while American Yared Nuguse won the bronze with a of 3:27.80, the Courier-Journal reports.
Annette Nneka Echikunwoke, a Nigerian-American who lives in Pickerington, Ohio, made history by becoming the first woman to earn a medal for the U.S. in the hammer throw, ESPN reports. Her throw of 75.48 meters (247 feet, 7 inches) was good for silver. Canada’s Camryn Rogers won gold with 76.97 meters (252-6) and Zhao Jie of China won the bronze (74.27 meters).
Akron native LeBron James had 12 points and nine assists as the U.S. team crushed Brazil, 122-87, on Tuesday, Yahoo! reports. Devin Booker had 18 points as six U.S. players scored in double figures. The U.S. will face Serbia on Thursday in the semifinals.
American Caroline Marks won gold in the women’s shortboard competition in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, USA Today reports. Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb won silver and France’s Johanne Defay won bronze.
Marks posted a two-wave score of 10.50 while Webb finished with a combined score of 10.33. It’s the second straight gold medal in surfing for the U.S. in the Olympics. Carissa Moore won it in Tokyo in 2021.
“I’m just really happy and just trying to soak everything in because it’s probably the best day in my life,” Marks said. “Once they announced (Weston-Webb) didn’t get enough, I just burst into tears. Just super emotional — your whole life goes into a moment like this, so it’s just really special.”
