Many musicians dream of producing the kind of hit single that becomes popular once a year for one reason or another. Most artists looking for such a win rely on Christmas classics, while others find success with songs that are forever connected to a special day, date, or month on the calendar.
Taylor Swift has several tracks that either are or could become annual favorites. One of them has surged yet again, and as the individual song returns, the album it’s featured on is rising once more.
The singer’s Folklore album is climbing the Billboard charts this week. The set features a tune titled “August,” which remains a fan favorite throughout the year…but which obviously returns to prominence when July ends and the new month begins.
The resurgence of “August” has spurred a Folklore buying frenzy. The set sold another 7,100 copies in the past tracking period, according to Luminate. That’s a huge number for a project that’s already sold so well for so long—and which was released years ago.
From one tracking week to the next, sales of Folklore climbed by 86%. The frame before August began, the set was purchased just over 3,800 times in the U.S.
Those 7,100 purchases help Folklore soar on a number of rankings in America. This week, the Grammy-winning title jumps on half a dozen tallies. It returns to the top 10 on three of them, and it narrowly misses out on the highest tier on the Top Album Sales roster. On that important chart, Folklore lifts from No. 30 to No. 13.
Overall consumption of Folklore is also up. Swift’s imaginative album moved 25,100 equivalent units last frame. That’s up a little more than 29% from the period before, with streams of “August” likely doing more than their fair share to keep the project afloat.
